  • Remove leaves or debris from the gutters and drain pipes to prevent flooding
  • Clean, dry and store patio furniture to protect it from the elements
  • Check the windows and doors for cracks and seal with caulking or weather stripping if necessary
  • Schedule an appointment with a professional to inspect your furnace before first time usage to prevent a potential fire-hazard
  • Check that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly — replace batteries if necessary
  • Cover any vents and openings to prevent unwanted visitors from moving in
  • Stock up on the necessities — batteries, ice melt, bottled water, canned food, candles, medicine, dog/cat food, etc
